Anal Gland Care
Anal glands are scenting sacs located on the sides of the anus. In most cases, these glands are expressed automatically when a puppy defecates. However, some dogs do have problems with the glands becoming clogged.
Signs of difficulty include:
- A foul smell
- Licking at the anal area
- The classic "scooting" on the carpet
- Tail chasing
When any of these signs are noted, it is important that the glands be checked by a veterinarian to make sure that they are not impacted or infected. The Veterinarian can show you how to express the anal glands yourself or you can simply make an appointment to have it done every few months.
